Alzheimer's disease is a brain disorder that affects more than 5 million Americans. Research continues to bring us a better understanding of the disease, more accurate diagnoses, and more effective treatments. The disease was first described in 1906 by a German physician, Dr. Alois Alzheimer. Once considered rare, research has shown that it is the leading cause of dementia. Typically, the first problem noticed is forgetfulness severe enough to affect the work, lifelong hobbies or social life or those affected. Alzheimer's Association, St. Louis Chapter |
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the United States, and the second most common cause of cancer death in women. In the U.S. in 2007 an estimated 40,190 deaths will be caused by breast cancer. Breast cancer may be one of the oldest known forms of cancer in humans, dating back to Egypt about 1600 years ago. These ancient writings describe cases of tumors or ulcers of the breast. Go to Susan G. Komen For The Cure for more information. |
